60th Birthday Anniversary

17 Oct 2022

Lake Monger Recreation Club celebrated its 60th Birthday Anniversary on Saturday 15 October with a private function at its wonderful venue on the lake.

Guest included the honourable Minister for Churchlands Christine Tonkin and new Wembley Ward Councillor Ben Mayes. Members and invited guests were entertained by “Tres Classique” who were Joined by “Chris Murphy with Strings attached” a thoroughly entertaining musical ensemble.

Club President Robert Moseley provided a short history of the club saying “The Clubs inception dated back to 1958 but the Club (Wembley Bowls Club as it was known) was officially opened on October 13th, 1962. After some very prosperous years the club was split when many members joined the new Cambridge Bowling Club in Floreat, leaving the upkeep of 5 greens too much to maintain for fewer members. To attract a more diverse membership Wembley Bowling Club became Lake Monger Recreation Club. Petanque under an associated social group run by “Les Maison de France” became a popular sporting activity and Jive Dancing was also very popular. In 2007 two remaining Bowling greens were transformed into synthetic playing surfaces and a new generation of bowlers evolved. One green became a 5 a side soccer venue and another became what is now their function entertainment green.

In the last five years more transformations were made, and the club now has a very diverse and inclusive membership that caters for the Deaf community, Autism, Mothers groups and 7 different dance groups. Bowling is still extremely popular both socially and in Pennant competition. The Clubs vision is to keep building on the successes and work with the Town of Cambridge to make the Club rooms even more accessible.

At night the Club is often transformed into a fabulous entertainment area with lights and outside bars. The Honourable Christine Tonkin was quite taken with it effects. The Club was grateful to the Town of Cambridge for their hamper donation that was won by Tom Mc Alister. The club is also grateful to Anthony Ward who volunteered his time to MC the evening.
